The five pillars of literacy education are Phonics, Phonemic Awareness, Comprehension, Fluency, and Vocabulary.
Our class utilizes Reading Horizons for instruction in Phonics, Heggerty for instruction in Phonemic Awareness, and Wonders for instruction in Comprehension, Fluency, and Vocabulary.
Your student can expect to receive well-rounded literacy instruction aligned with the latest research from the Science of Reading. Students should also expect to work in whole-group and small-group instruction during class, with individual instruction focused on student growth in areas needing improvement.

HOMEWORK
Every week, students will receive homework consisting of a fluency and comprehension passage and spelling pattern practice. Students are also expected to read 20 minutes per night. These assignments are due the last day of the school week, usually Friday unless it is a short week. Student homework accounts for 5% of the literacy grade. One assignment will be automatically dropped.
BOOK REPORTS
Reading is the number one indicator for student success in school. To encourage students to read a variety of texts throughout the school year, student will be expected to complete a book report every term. Students will be provided with a template to follow for each report. This project should not take massive amounts of time and should require little parental support.
